Adela Hernandez, the first transgender person to be elected to political office in Cuba, marches at the front of a parade during an early celebration of the International Day Against Homophobia in Havana in May 2013. Hernandez was elected to the municipal council of Caibarién in the Villa Clara Province in November 2012. She spent two years in prison In the 1980's because her transgender identity was in violation of the public decency laws at the time.
